How to Wash Your Fiber Cement Siding

Share -

James Hardie recommends the following steps for cleaning and maintaining fiber cement siding:

  1. Routine Cleaning: Use a garden hose to wash down the exterior surfaces every 6 to 12 months. Gently clean the siding with a soft brush or wet cloth in a side-to-side motion, following the direction of the plank siding. It’s important to work in small sections from the top down to avoid streaking.
  2. Brush and Water: A low-pressure water spray and a soft, medium-bristle (non-metal) brush are most suitable for cleaning fiber cement products. High-pressure washing and acidic cleaners can damage the siding and are not recommended.
  3. Mild Detergent for Stains: For stubborn dirt or stains on James Hardie ColorPlus® products, water and a soft brush or cloth can be used, and if necessary, a mild detergent can be applied with a soft brush for cleaning.

Bonus Cleaning and Maintenance Tips:

  1. Pressure Washer Caution: If using a pressure washer, take care to avoid damage by using a wide fan tip, maintaining a minimum distance of 6 feet from the wall, and keeping the pressure below 1500 psi.
  2. General Maintenance: Ensure gutters and downspouts are installed and clear of debris, keep vegetation trimmed away from the siding, adjust sprinklers to avoid excessive water spray on the siding, avoid contact with deicing salts, and maintain necessary ground clearances and drainage slopes around the home.
