About Orcas Island
Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juan Islands in Washington State, has a rich and varied history shaped by its indigenous inhabitants, European explorers, early settlers, and the industries that sustained it over the years. Long before the arrival of Europeans, the island was home to Coast Salish tribes, particularly the Lummi and Samish people, who lived along the shores and in the forests, relying on the abundant natural resources for food, shelter, and trade. They harvested salmon, shellfish, and berries, hunted deer, and carved cedar canoes to navigate the waters of the Salish Sea. Seasonal village sites were established along the coastline, and evidence of their long history can still be found in shell middens and petroglyphs scattered throughout the island.
The first recorded European exploration of the San Juan Islands occurred in the late 18th century. Spanish explorers arrived in 1791, with Francisco de Eliza mapping the region and naming the island “Horcasitas” after Juan Vicente de Güemes Padilla Horcasitas, the Viceroy of New Spain. The name was later shortened to Orcas, and despite the Spanish origins, it was the British who dominated exploration and mapping in the area. In 1792, George Vancouver’s expedition further charted the waters around the island, laying the groundwork for future claims and conflicts between European nations.
Throughout the early 19th century, the Hudson’s Bay Company established a fur trading presence in the Pacific Northwest, and the San Juan Islands became part of a contested region between Britain and the United States. This dispute reached a peak with the Pig War of 1859, a confrontation sparked when an American settler shot a British-owned pig on nearby San Juan Island. While no battles took place on Orcas Island, it was part of the territorial negotiations that eventually resulted in the United States gaining control of the San Juan Islands in 1872.
With the boundary dispute settled, settlers began arriving on Orcas Island in greater numbers. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a rise in industries such as logging, farming, and fishing. The island’s dense forests provided ample timber, and small sawmills were established to process the wood. The fertile valleys supported orchards, with apples and pears becoming important crops. The waters surrounding the island were rich with fish, particularly salmon, and commercial fishing operations thrived for decades. At the same time, lime quarrying became a major industry, with kilns operating near the shoreline to produce lime used in construction and agriculture.
One of the most notable figures in the island’s history was Robert Moran, a wealthy shipbuilder from Seattle who, after suffering from health issues, retired to Orcas Island in the early 1900s. Moran built a grand estate, Rosario, which still stands today as a historic resort and museum. More significantly, he donated a large portion of his land to create Moran State Park, which remains one of the island’s most beloved natural areas. The park, with its extensive trail system and the iconic Mount Constitution, has become a key attraction for visitors and a testament to Moran’s commitment to preserving the island’s beauty.
As industries evolved, so did the island’s character. By the mid-20th century, many of the traditional industries such as logging and commercial fishing declined, giving way to tourism and conservation efforts. The scenic landscapes, quiet rural atmosphere, and artistic community attracted visitors looking for a retreat from city life. The island became a haven for artists, writers, and nature enthusiasts who were drawn to its peaceful setting and strong sense of community.
Orcas Island’s economy today is largely driven by tourism, with visitors arriving by ferry, boat, and seaplane to experience its charming villages, outdoor activities, and stunning scenery. Eastsound, the island’s main town, has grown into a hub for local businesses, restaurants, and cultural events, while smaller communities such as Olga, Doe Bay, and West Sound maintain the island’s historic and rural character. Preservation efforts continue to be a priority for the island’s residents, ensuring that its natural beauty and historical sites remain protected for future generations.
Despite modernization, Orcas Island retains a deep connection to its past. The legacy of the Coast Salish people is still evident in the land and the traditions that survive. The remnants of old homesteads, lime kilns, and fishing docks serve as reminders of the island’s working history. The spirit of conservation, instilled by figures like Robert Moran, continues to influence the way the island develops. While times have changed, Orcas remains a place where history and nature intertwine, offering a glimpse into the past while embracing the future.

Why Bellingham Homes Need Moisture-Smart Exterior Systems
Bellingham’s coastal climate isn’t just picturesque—it’s also especially demanding on your home’s exterior. Between salt air drifting in from the bay, heavy seasonal rains, and relentless freeze-thaw cycles from November through March, it takes more than “good enough” siding to protect your investment. At Siding Vault, we’ve built our reputation as the region’s go-to exterior specialist by installing systems designed for the moisture profile of Northwest Washington, not against it.
