About Point Roberts

Point Roberts, a small and unique geopolitical oddity located at the southernmost tip of British Columbia, has a history shaped by geography, international treaties, indigenous heritage, and shifting economic tides. Long before European explorers arrived, the land was inhabited by Coast Salish tribes, including the Lummi and Tsawwassen peoples, who lived along the shores and utilized the abundant marine resources of the Salish Sea. They fished for salmon, gathered shellfish, and traveled in cedar canoes, maintaining a deep spiritual and practical connection to the land and waters. Seasonal villages and fishing camps were common in the area, as the surrounding waters teemed with life and provided sustenance for generations.

European exploration of the Pacific Northwest in the late 18th century brought dramatic changes to the region. In 1792, British naval officer and explorer George Vancouver charted the coastline, mapping what would become known as Point Roberts. The land was named after Henry Roberts, a fellow officer who had originally been chosen to lead the expedition before circumstances changed. Despite its location directly south of the 49th parallel, which would later become the U.S.-Canada border, Point Roberts was not initially considered significant, as it was a remote and sparsely populated peninsula.

The peculiar geopolitical status of Point Roberts was sealed in 1846 with the signing of the Oregon Treaty between Britain and the United States. The treaty established the 49th parallel as the official boundary between U.S. and British territory, extending from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. However, the drafters of the treaty failed to account for the small peninsula that jutted just south of the border, inadvertently making Point Roberts a part of the United States while remaining physically disconnected from the rest of the country. This oversight resulted in one of the most unusual exclaves in North America—American land that can only be accessed by land through Canada.

Following the treaty, American settlers slowly began arriving in Point Roberts, though its isolation limited rapid development. The peninsula’s early economy revolved around fishing, with canneries emerging along the shoreline in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Salmon fishing became a dominant industry, attracting both American and Canadian workers who processed the abundant fish in local facilities. At its peak, Point Roberts housed multiple canneries that supplied fish to markets across North America. Alongside fishing, small-scale farming and logging contributed to the local economy, though the community remained relatively small due to its geographical limitations.

Despite its American status, Point Roberts has always maintained strong ties to Canada. Throughout the 20th century, much of the town’s commerce and infrastructure were deeply linked to the neighboring city of Vancouver, British Columbia, just 25 miles to the north. Many Canadian families purchased summer homes in Point Roberts, drawn to its quiet, scenic landscape and peaceful beaches. As a result, the population of Point Roberts would often swell in the summer months as vacationers arrived, then drop significantly in the winter.

The border status of Point Roberts became particularly significant during times of political or global upheaval. During Prohibition in the 1920s, the peninsula became a hotspot for smuggling liquor into the United States, as its remote location made it an ideal point for bootleggers. Small boats would ferry alcohol across Boundary Bay, evading U.S. authorities and taking advantage of the complex jurisdictional situation. Similarly, in more recent history, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the community’s unique position when border restrictions between the U.S. and Canada cut off easy access to essential services, requiring special permissions and arrangements to ensure residents could access necessities.

Over the decades, Point Roberts has remained a quiet and somewhat isolated community, with a small year-round population that hovers around 1,000 residents. It lacks large-scale commercial development and retains a rural, small-town atmosphere, with a few local businesses catering to both residents and Canadian visitors. Tourism and cross-border shopping have played a significant role in the local economy, as Canadians frequently visit for cheaper fuel, groceries, and real estate opportunities. However, its reliance on cross-border traffic has also made the community vulnerable to shifts in border policies and economic conditions.

Today, Point Roberts remains a place of contradictions—geographically American, yet culturally intertwined with Canada. Its history is one of adaptation and resilience, shaped by international treaties, shifting economies, and a strong sense of local identity. The legacy of the indigenous peoples, the boom and bust cycles of the fishing industry, and the unique challenges of border life all contribute to the story of this small but fascinating community. Despite its unusual position on the map, Point Roberts continues to be a place where history, geography, and identity intersect in ways found nowhere else in the United States.

Why Bellingham Homes Need Moisture-Smart Exterior Systems

Bellingham’s coastal climate isn’t just picturesque—it’s also especially demanding on your home’s exterior. Between salt air drifting in from the bay, heavy seasonal rains, and relentless freeze-thaw cycles from November through March, it takes more than “good enough” siding to protect your investment. At Siding Vault, we’ve built our reputation as the region’s go-to exterior specialist by installing systems designed for the moisture profile of Northwest Washington, not against it.
