About Barkley

The Barkley Neighborhood emerged in 2010 as a response to the northern neighborhood boundary review project, triggered by the approval of several large annexations that led to significant growth in certain north-end neighborhoods. In 2009, concerned residents urged the City to reassess the boundaries of the Mt. Baker, Guide Meridian/Cordata, Meridian, and King Mountain Neighborhoods. Consequently, the Mt. Baker Neighborhood underwent a transformation, resulting in the creation of two new neighborhoods in 2010: Irongate and Barkley.

Spanning 814 acres primarily south of Sunset Drive and north of the Roosevelt and Alabama Hill Neighborhoods, Barkley became a distinct community with a diverse mix of land uses. The neighborhood’s central focal point is the Barkley Urban Village development, strategically situated around the Woburn/Barkley Boulevard intersection. This development, one of the city’s first urban villages, seamlessly integrates industrial, retail, professional offices, and residential spaces.

Barkley’s residential development saw a significant boost in the mid-1990s with the construction of Barkley Boulevard from Britton Road to Orleans Street. This expansion opened up the west-facing slope of Alabama Hill, resulting in the creation of several subdivisions. The boulevard is now lined with new homes offering expansive city and bay views as it winds up Alabama Hill.

The neighborhood’s existing character, coupled with open space areas, trails, and view corridors, continues to be cherished by its residents. Ongoing considerations in zoning designations and project reviews prioritize the preservation of these valued characteristics.

Barkley Village, a 250-acre urban village located just east of Interstate 5, forms a significant part of Barkley’s identity.
