About Friday Harbor

Friday Harbor, a small yet historically rich town on San Juan Island, has long been a focal point of activity in the San Juan archipelago. Long before European settlers arrived, the region was home to the Coast Salish people, including the Lummi and Samish tribes, who used the island seasonally for fishing, hunting, and gathering. The protected harbor provided an ideal location for harvesting shellfish and drying fish, while the surrounding forests and meadows offered ample game and plant life. Indigenous people navigated the waterways in large cedar canoes, establishing trade networks that extended far beyond the islands. Their deep connection to the land and water is evident in the artifacts, shell middens, and petroglyphs that remain scattered across the island today.

European exploration of the San Juan Islands began in the late 18th century when Spanish and British navigators charted the region. Francisco de Eliza’s Spanish expedition in 1791 provided the first recorded European mapping of the area, followed by George Vancouver’s British expedition in 1792. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century that the islands saw a permanent European presence. By the 1850s, both British and American interests were vying for control of the San Juan archipelago, leading to the now-famous Pig War of 1859. The dispute began when an American settler, Lyman Cutlar, shot a British-owned pig that had wandered onto his property. Though the conflict never turned violent, both nations sent military forces to San Juan Island, where they remained in a tense but peaceful standoff for over a decade. The dispute was ultimately settled in 1872 when an international commission, led by Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany, ruled in favor of the United States, making San Juan Island officially American territory.

Following the resolution of the boundary dispute, settlers began arriving on the island in greater numbers. Friday Harbor, named after a Kanaka (Hawaiian) sheep herder known as “Friday,” developed as a center of economic activity. In the late 19th century, the town grew around its natural harbor, which provided a strategic location for trade and transportation. The fishing industry flourished, with salmon and shellfish becoming key exports. At the same time, agriculture played a significant role in shaping the community. Sheep and cattle ranching, along with dairy farming, became common, and the island’s fertile land supported apple orchards and vegetable farms.

By the early 20th century, Friday Harbor had become a thriving hub, attracting a mix of settlers, fishermen, and entrepreneurs. The construction of a steamboat dock in the 1880s facilitated trade with mainland Washington, allowing island goods to reach larger markets. The town officially incorporated in 1909, solidifying its role as the commercial and political center of San Juan Island. Around this time, the fishing industry expanded further with the development of salmon canneries, which employed a diverse workforce, including immigrants from China, Japan, and Scandinavia. The waters surrounding Friday Harbor were rich with marine life, and fishing remained a dominant industry for decades.

Despite its economic growth, Friday Harbor maintained a small-town atmosphere, with its economy shifting over time. The decline of the commercial fishing and agricultural industries in the mid-20th century led to a gradual transition toward tourism and conservation. The opening of the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories in 1904 marked an important development in marine research, attracting scientists and students from around the world. The lab continues to be a leading center for marine biology and oceanographic studies, contributing to the town’s reputation as a place of scientific inquiry.

Tourism began to take off in the latter half of the 20th century, as people discovered the natural beauty of San Juan Island. The introduction of ferry service made it easier for visitors to reach Friday Harbor, and the town became a popular destination for whale watching, boating, and outdoor recreation. The presence of orcas in the surrounding waters drew significant interest, leading to the establishment of conservation efforts to protect marine wildlife. The San Juan Islands National Monument, created in 2013, further reinforced the region’s commitment to environmental preservation.

Today, Friday Harbor retains much of its historical charm while continuing to evolve. Many of the town’s historic buildings remain, housing local businesses, galleries, and restaurants. The waterfront, once bustling with fishing boats and trade vessels, is now lined with marinas catering to recreational boaters and visitors. Though it has grown into a vibrant tourist destination, Friday Harbor still reflects the legacy of the people who shaped it—from the Coast Salish tribes who first called it home to the settlers, fishermen, and researchers who followed. Its history is deeply intertwined with the surrounding land and sea, a testament to the resilience and adaptability of those who have lived and worked there over the centuries.
