About Sehome
Sehome is a vibrant and historic neighborhood located in the southern part of Bellingham, Washington. Established in 1858, it was the first town on Bellingham Bay, founded by coal mine manager Edmund C. Fitzhugh, and was later incorporated into the city of Bellingham in 1891. The neighborhood has a rich architectural heritage, with a mix of Victorian-era mansions, Craftsman bungalows, and more modern residences, reflecting the area’s evolving identity over more than a century and giving it a unique and charming character.
One of Sehome’s most notable features is the Sehome Hill Arboretum, a 175-acre public park and nature preserve that occupies the southern half of the neighborhood. The arboretum offers over five miles of trails that wind through forests, open meadows, and along creeks, providing ample opportunities for walking, running, birdwatching, and enjoying the outdoors. An 80-foot wooden observation tower atop Sehome Hill provides sweeping panoramic views of Bellingham Bay, the surrounding islands, and the Cascade Mountains. The arboretum is managed jointly by Western Washington University and the City of Bellingham, serving as both a natural sanctuary and a place for community engagement and recreation.
In addition to the arboretum, Sehome features smaller neighborhood parks, including Laurel Park and Forest & Cedar Park. Each of these parks spans approximately two acres and provides residents with playgrounds, open lawns, and basketball courts. These green spaces offer families and individuals a place to gather, exercise, and socialize, enhancing the neighborhood’s sense of community. The abundance of parks and open spaces, combined with tree-lined streets and well-maintained sidewalks, contributes to Sehome’s reputation as a highly walkable and family-friendly neighborhood.
Sehome’s central location within Bellingham makes it highly desirable for residents who want access to the amenities of the city while enjoying a quieter, residential environment. The neighborhood is just a short distance from downtown Bellingham, offering convenient access to shops, restaurants, cultural venues, and entertainment. Its proximity to Western Washington University also makes it popular with students, faculty, and staff, creating a dynamic and youthful atmosphere. Cafes, bookstores, and community spaces are scattered throughout the area, giving residents plenty of options for social interaction, dining, and local events.
Housing in Sehome is diverse, ranging from historic single-family homes with character and charm to modern apartment buildings and townhomes. While some properties within the neighborhood are part of smaller homeowners associations that maintain common areas or enforce certain architectural standards, the neighborhood as a whole does not have a single governing HOA. Community engagement and neighborhood advocacy are instead supported by the Sehome Neighborhood Association, which works to preserve the area’s historic character, promote safety, and represent residents’ interests in city planning and development decisions. This approach allows for flexibility while maintaining a strong sense of community cohesion.
Living in Sehome offers a blend of historical charm, natural beauty, and urban convenience. Residents enjoy access to expansive parks, scenic trails, and recreational amenities while being close to the cultural and commercial offerings of downtown Bellingham. The neighborhood’s combination of walkability, green spaces, and proximity to the university creates an active and engaging lifestyle for families, professionals, and students alike. Seasonal events, local gatherings, and volunteer opportunities further strengthen the neighborhood’s sense of community, making it a welcoming place for newcomers while maintaining its unique historic identity.
Overall, Sehome provides a distinctive and appealing residential experience. Its rich architectural variety, abundant natural spaces, and strong neighborhood connections make it one of Bellingham’s most desirable areas to live. Residents can enjoy both the tranquility of a close-knit community and the convenience of city amenities, all within a setting that reflects the history, culture, and natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The neighborhood’s careful balance of development and preservation, combined with its active community involvement, ensures that Sehome remains a vibrant and welcoming place for generations of residents.
